Bombers QB Matt Nichols on Johnny Manziel: back it up on the field

Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols believes Johnny Manziel should be more focused on playing football than making absurd contract asks.

“You can demand all you want. I’d be less worried about trying to get paid like a top-tier starter and more worried about seeing the field. He’s going to have to back it up on the field or he’ll be out of the league as quickly as he’s in it,” Nichols told 680 CJOB in Winnipeg.

The Manziel saga has played out for more than five months since agent Erik Burkhardt activated the 10-day clause in September.

“I just want him to get signed or not signed, get it over with, because it’s kind of like spam on my Twitter feed,” Nichols said.

Presumptive Ticats starter Jeremiah Masoli and Nichols spent one season together in Edmonton in 2012. Masoli threw for 3,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing over 63 per cent of his passes going 6-4 as a starter in 2017, which earned him a two-year extension in Hamilton.

“Masoli has paid his dues, he’s earned that job,” Nichols said.

“I’ve been in the league for eight years now, and anyone that’s trying to use the CFL to come up, play and go back to the NFL, I’ve never seen that work out one time. Usually, it’s the guys that come up, embrace it, ball out for a couple of years, they can get another shot down there.”

  1. thank you, Matt….class act and an asset to our league and country

  2. Great comment by Nicoles, unfortunate that more and more players are weighing in on the Manzel mini drama , but obviously they feel somewhat disrespected by the guy. Its not often in pro sports that players come to making negative comments about each other publically but in Manzels case he seems to have alienated a portion of the leagues players without even having played a down in the league. Now if THAT does not speak to Manzels LACK of CHARACTER I don’t know what else can !!!!

You can bet that his possible future team mates are also taking note and he might have trouble being welcome if he is signed. Not a good way to start. They will not be commenting I’m sure as that would not be classy for someone that close to the story.

  4. I don’t disagree with what you guys are saying, but at the same time, a lot of these CFL players are jealous of him being a one time NFL player and having a shot to go back.

Most of the players in the CFL would have done and probably would still do anything to have had an NFL contract…

So they are also hating on him just as much

    • Nobody is hating on him there just saying come up and prove your self pay your dues first don’t demand a starters salary without playing a down from a ticat fan

Manziel is not the first to come from the south to this league thinking the pickins is easy. Just bring your video highlights and an agent in tow who will ask for the moon.

I hope he signs up here (not Hamilton).

This fool is long overdue for a wakeup call.

  5. brandon Zylstra just came to CFl 1 and 1/3 seasons now with vikings. so that us one time there.

    • Did Zylstra’s agent demand top money and issue an negotiation deadline ultimatum, before he signed with Edmonton?

Otherwise, it’s an irrelevant comparison. Brandon earned his NFL shot the way respected CFL players do — in due time, with hard work.

Agreed on Nicols, class act. Seems like everyone gets it about Manziel except for the management. If Manziel gets more than he should, our FA’s will scatter like cock roaches when the lights come on. We will lose integrity and respect as a team. Nobody needs this egomaniac.

    • What makes you think that Management doesn’t get it? Do you think they haven’t previously dealt it agents who think their clients should make more than what any team is going to offer an unproven player? It’s Johnny and his agent who “don’t get it”!

      • Tiger Chick // January 9, 2018 at 7:20 pm //

Johnny and his agent definitely don’t get it. My point is that management has made their offer, its refused so call it a day and move on from the shi.. show. No need for extra effort for a guy who will ultimately cause grief for the franchaise.

  7. good old ralph sazio would have settled this situation

    • Tiger man // January 10, 2018 at 9:38 am //

Oh yeah…I would love to be a fly on the wall for that discussion…although likely a very short one…

Ralph would not suffer fools very well…

  8. Trade Johnny Rotten’s rights….we don’t need his BS in Hamilton!

  9. the flammer // January 9, 2018 at 5:36 pm //

if you,re looking to create trouble on your team, get rid of manziels rights now before he creates more problems with the ticats.

  10. Tiger Ted // January 9, 2018 at 5:52 pm //

Trade his rights to Halifax for some lobsters.

  11. Manziel would be a great fit in Calgary’s “me first” locker room atmosphere. Calgary being Calgary! And he’d also enjoy racist Alberta, just like in Texas Johnny!

  12. Trade his rights for draft picks and a starter that is Canadian. Masoli is the man in the hammer. he is tough as nails.

  13. Nicholls does have class and he has paid his dues.

  14. True green // January 9, 2018 at 11:12 pm //

Nichols says it like it is and with class. There’s no room in our league for guys that think thebdearve $500k to start when they haven’t made one play.

Nice to read a thread that the asshat donkie hasn’t posted on. I hope I didn’t jinx it.

  15. Remember drew willys outrageous ask in Winnipeg without proving anything? He got it . This isn’t without precedent.. like 450 k or some damn thing? Someone’s stupid enough to pay this idiot because people are stupid. All I know is I’m glad we got Zach and c Jones steered clear of this going show.

  16. Little Steve // January 10, 2018 at 9:17 am //

Wow, do they not have agents in the CFL? Everyone here is acting like this has something to do with Manziel when it was his agent that is working for more money. That is what agents do. If a few extra tweets gets under this guy’s skin then the players have no idea what they are getting into and maybe the CFL should not allow anyone to sign Manziel. This is absolutely nothing compared to the media circus that is on the horizon, JFF literally has reporters digging through his garbage…

  17. Please see interview today by Dave naylor and k Austin. You will learn a lot more about the character of agent and Manziel. By the way Nichols I do not believe is saying you have to pay your dues if in fact the coach thinks Manziel should be a starter base on spring training camp and exhibition games and into the season. June Jones will decide not the bloggers here.
