Ticats make Jeremiah Masoli signing official

As 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reported on Wednesday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have re-signed quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to a two-year contract.

The 29-year-old QB threw for 3,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing over 63 per cent of his passes, adding 70 carries for 446 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Masoli’s best numbers since coming to the CFL in 2013. He went 6-4 as a starter in 2017.

“Jeremiah is a proven dual-threat quarterback who’s outstanding work ethic, competitive nature and resilience is infectious to his teammates and everyone on our staff,” said June Jones, head coach of the Tiger-Cats in a statement.

“We’re very excited to have him back in Hamilton for the next two seasons as he continues to elevate his game to new levels.”

After being named Hamilton’s starting quarterback on September 4, Masoli led the Canadian Football League the rest of the season in passing yards (3,032) and rushing yards by a quarterback (384), was tied for second in passing touchdowns (15), and had the second-least interceptions (4) among starting quarterbacks over that span.

I’m glad to hear that the Cats have signed Jeremiah, and also happy to see that Zach has landed in a place where he is likely to be the starter (and as June Jones said, a team that can compete for a championship). Sounds like the best possible outcome for all concerned.

    • Collaros still has to sign a re-vamped contract … but that is the Rider’s issue.

Unless a failure to agree on a contract results in the Riders trading Collaros to Montreal or Toronto, as some Rider fans have suggested.

    • Very nice comment, Anthony. I am also happy to see “Mazaratti” back. Now Coach can concentrate on working with him more instead of being interim and getting invited back!

  2. Right, well the masses got their wish. The fantasy football superstar is now the starting quarterback. Huzzah, I guess.

All the Masoli lovers, remember this when Masoli’s history of making a litany of dumb mistakes makes a 13-5 season devolve into a 9-9 season, costing us a home playoff date and leading to an early playoff exit.

And Manziel’s not starting next year. Anyone who says otherwise got a jump start on legal marijuana.

    • Does this mean that if Jones and Mazoli produce a 12 – 6 season to take first in the East you will take remember your prediction as well?

    • This is exactly right.

Masoli has a nasty habit of throwing the ball up for grabs as he is about to take a sack. We were fortunate this year that those all fell harmlessly to the ground but if 2 or 3 were intercepted, it would have been a very different end to the year.

If he can cut down on the catastrophic mistakes, he could be a good or even great QB but I haven’t seen him improve in this area in his time in the league.

      • I seem to recall eight starts for Masoli in 2016 where the official stats are 15 TDs and 12 INTs.

Ten starts in 2017 had 15 TDs and 5 INTs.

Does this mean you don’t count fewer INTs as an improvement?

Or perhaps you are letting the ones you remember have too much weight?

    • Masoli was a disaster when he first came to the Cats. He was a turnover machine (the guy liked to fumble, prompting the nickname “Mazola” because of his greasy fingers). I’m the first to admit he has been coached up a bit and has turned that around as of late, but I think he’s still far from anything considered elite. If Kent & Company can use those four 1st & 2nd Round draft picks wisely, sign some decent O-Linemen, and shore up the D with that Collaros cap money, we’ll be OK.

    • I’ll take 6-4 over a pathetic 0-12…but hey, that’s your opinion. Mary Jane has nothing to do with it.

If Zach is likely to be a starter who can compete for a championship, why did we let him go? Oh yea, they paid him a kings ransom and now were strapped for money. Me thinks — the team got scared that injuries caused by idiotic offensive schemes, no run game, poor blocking- have injuried Zach’s mental state and /or physical abilities to the point where he was no longer effective. WE all wonder how Zach would have done under Jones’ offense — but they made that decision when Masoli was given the keys to the car. It may prove to be the right call.. time will tell.

    • Or maybe it is as simple as big salary plus new HC sees better choices/skill sets for his type of offense.

Either way, it is done so it is time to move on.

I believe I alluded to that. The deed is done and was to be expected given how last year rolled out. I stand by my observations all the same. Good luck to Masoli — a good person. We’ll see how things progress. Team needs a ton of work IMO….. Steve Milton’s article…excellent analysis.

Have been waiting for this sweet deal. Jeremiah “White shoes” Masoli will lead the Ti-Cats to great things in 2018.

CONGRATULATIONS Ticats, good signing. 2018 will be a great year for you! Grey Cup bound!

  6. So much for the theory that Masoli was worried about Manziel to the point of waiting until FA …

  7. Awesome news! Masoli was the best QB in the league the last 10 games of the year in 2017. Masoli has a lot of Bernie Faloney in him and will continue to improve under June Jones. 2018 is shaping up nicely for the Tiger-Cats. Oskee Wee Wee.

With all due respect..I think you and I were watching two different QBs. He was good sprinkiled with inconsistent and awful,,,,but mostly servicable with a limited playbook, solid running and better protection.

    • Yep…absolutely agree.

  8. Great news! The kid only played half a season and had some amazing numbers. And those numbers don’t lie.

Anybody have any idea of $$$$$$ you would think there were be a six figure signing bonus to take advantage of only 15% tax on a signing bonus

  10. I predict by labour day Masoli will be riding the bench. I just don’t see him as a long time starting qb…

  11. …. the guy played well the last 10 games of the season, who knows if he had gotten in earlier Tigercats may have found themselves in the playoffs….he deserves the contract …. exactly as stated he is a dual threat quarterback and has proven at least in a small sample of games that he can play…. being negative and predicting he will fail is loser mentality….

  12. Good move by the TiCats and Masoli. He picks up where he left off in 2018 and if Manziel signs he will push him be be even better or zoom by him if he plays at his NCAA level like some think he can at the CFL level. A nice problem to have for June Jones.

  13. Couple of those losses were on the D.Recall the Argos 3 and 17 and getting a 1st down, tying and then winning. Don’t think that was JM’s fault.
Team game. Great D and JM and the O will be fine.

  14. Stats don’t lie! JM was simply the best QB in the CFL the last ten games, and he’s the only QB in the league that had to absorb a new game plan mid-season. Don’t underestimate that challenge, either. He’s stopped forcing throws, which is the flaw of any inexperienced QB. Remember a young Calvillo? How ’bout Bo -Levi? He hasn’t stopped throwing big ones either! Also, Masoli’s durable! I don’t think he’s missed dressing due to injury. Built like a fullback, and runs like one. An absolute essential in JJ’s offense. Having said that, successful CFL teams need two start-capable QBs, so offer Manziel a reasonable contract with lots of performance bonuses, and have a true tryout with M & M. They ain’t scared!

  16. Masoli is an average quarterback. Manziel playing at his potential will be a superstar in CFl. Mazoli may start the first chapter upper if games for Manziel to get familiar with CFL game. Once this happens Mazoli knows he will be backup and must be good with that. This must of been part of the discussions. All CFL fans at the Hamilton away from home games will be going to see what the hype is re Johnny football.

  18. Who knows that with a new offense, bestter offensive line, improved defense and recievers that Zach couldnt have taken the team all the way. It is what it is now. I like Masoli but there is a reason his nickname was masola. He fumbles a lot and throws pick when pressured. Cant throw the short pass. Terrible in the red zone. But im optimistic, he was much improved last season and with Jones there a full camp who knows. We still have some guys I think must be resigned like Tasker and some on defense but this could be a good year for the cats. Sorry to see Zach go but good luck Jeremiah.

Congratulations to JM. He deserves a chance to be a starter.

Manziel has proven he is no wonder boy. He will only try here if it will pay off in lucrative advertising deals in the USA. Considering he has a cult following, coming here might work but only if he wins. I can only think of one Heisman Trophy rookie in the CFL who ever came here and got to the Grey Cup first season. Guess who? I’ll answer in my next post.

Coach Jones runs a very QB friendly offence. Whoever is given the keys will have success!
