Shawn Lemon scripted celebrating the Argos Grey Cup victory like an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw.
After Toronto won the East Final Lemon planned to get the WWE championship belt from a neighbour in his downtown condo. The acquaintance used to work for WWE and had an authentic belt.
“A lot of the guys were surprised when they touched it at how heavy it was, it’s eight to 10 pounds,” Lemon said. “I got it from him right before the parade on Tuesday.”
Lemon suspected it was the one John Cena wore during his reign as WWE champion and 3DownNation’s wrestling expert, Josh Smith confirmed.
“That is the old John Cena spinner belt. They used that between 2005-2013. They changed it when the Rock was champ the last time after he beat CM Punk at the 2013 Royal Rumble. The Rock debuted the new one in mid-February that year.”
While the confetti was falling in Ottawa, Lemon had a message for his former Stampeders teammate.
“Charleston’s a great player, but he should probably focus on the gameplan instead of talking trash about my quarterback next time,” Lemon said with a wry smile.
Hughes had some choice words for Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray before the CFL championship game.
“Ricky Ray is not difficult to get down at all,” Hughes said. “He’s one of the easier quarterbacks to sack because when he sees you coming he’s going to turtle.”
The belt was brought out for the first time in nearly five years and served as a reminder to Hughes about what happened on Sunday.
“That I’m a champ,” Lemon said.
“We ate dinner together two nights before the game, his family and my family, so we’re good friends. We just find a way to poke each other and keep each other motivated.”
Lemon and Hughes were on FaceTime shortly after the Argos won the Grey Cup.
“I immediately grabbed my championship hat,” Lemon said laughing, “and put it on when he called.”
