Odell Willis subjected to racist tweet after win over Bombers

Edmonton Eskimos defensive end Odell Willis was on the receiving end of a particularly nasty and racist tweet after his team’s victory over the Bombers.

Hillhouse’s profile description on Twitter puts him in Winnipeg – and also the “Bassist and founder of Grunge Rock band Her Beautiful Demise” – and his other tweet during Sunday’s Western Semi-Final complained about the Eskimos celebration after a touchdown. Not much by way of Bombers content otherwise.

Willis is black so the Tweet’s references to fried chicken and KFC are overtly offensive and racist – here’s an explanation as to why if you really need it – while the rest of it is just vile and disgusting.

Willis’ response was generous and measured, particularly by comparison.

Various fans came to Willis’ defence with one Bomber fan making the very salient point on how one person’s ignorant action has the potential to adversely impact an otherwise decent group of people.

Somebody needs to send Mr. Hillhouse a Diversity Is Strength t-shirt. Or at least explain the basic concept.

On behalf of all other guys who carry the first name Alex; Alex Hillhouse is a racist goof and in no way represents real CFL fans. Clearly he represents the worst of the worst in this country.

  2. Just throwing it out there have you actually looked at his pics and profile drew? This kid has autism and not in a joking sense he is mentally handicapped.

    • Alex Droho // November 13, 2017 at 3:01 pm //

Quickly googled autism; I just don’t see anything that relates to this kid. Also, don’t think he is mentally handicapped although I do agree with the mental part.

  3. Mark: Does that make it ok?

  4. Is his comment ok no. Is it the exact definition of his condition and what is to be expected of someone without the means to express himself to me yes. Is it ok for a media outlet to call out a handicap kid joe?

    • You’re right, Mark. Sad to say, The National Enquirer, rather, 3downnation doesn’t miss a beat. Like lots of the reporting, but sometimes it’s a little too much.

  5. No racist comments are ever good. Even if you don’t like the player or the team he plays for, not necessary to make comments like that. Not sure of this person’s condition but social media gets way too carried away. Wish we never had some of the garbage we’re now exposed to. Whatever happened to the 1970’s or even ’80’s. Life was a lot simpler and a lot kinder. Anyways, Go Riders!!!

  6. Thank you, Odell for taking the high-road in answering this nincompoop “Alex” Twitter post! You showed a lot of class vs the person totally lacking any class at all.

From a Rider fan & an Odell Willis fan (except, when you’re playing against the Riders). Odell, there’s still lots of people who still love you as a player & as a person in Ridervile.

Hope to see you & the Esk’s playing against the Riders in the GC!

  7. Odell, you sir are a roll model of how people in this world need to be. Although you are not a Rider I still think your an amaning player. Keep your head high and god bless!

  8. Mark… Can you cite any proof that he is autistic? My son is autistic and there is no way shape or form that there is a malignant bone in his body. Before you try and stick his actions into a conditional response, try and educate yourself.

Of significance, the kid had openly stated he’s autistic in his twitter bio. I see he’s now removed that info.

  9. By running this article, the twitter goof gets a lot more press and a lot of satisfaction. Ignoring would have been better than giving him this platform.

  10. no matter….we will prevail and all the racists can eat it!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Incredibly offensive and immature, not defendable in any way. But did I miss the racist part?

  12. A IDIOT like Hillhouse really is not worth the time from me or anyone else in sending this comment. A real troubled man who definitely needs straightened out in the way he thinks and acts.

  13. Odell you is the man, you handled it perfectly , go ESKS go

    • The sentiment expressed clearly seems to be at one with the radical demand to love one’s enemies.

as a RIDER fan I have been at rider / bomber games in Winnipeg and have had mustard, ketchup squizzed at my LANCASTER jersey– at the 2016 banjo bowl a 9 year old had beer poured on his jersey— and bomber admin wonder why they get only 24700 fans for a playoff game.

  15. I went to high school with Alex. I can confirm he is mentally challenged. That obviously does not excuse what he said at all, but I hope it helps some put into reference his mindset when he wrote that tweet.

  16. Was it the chicken part? I don’t know, I don’t know what racist crap is…. However, the rest is correct 🙂 – this is professional football; or maybe you all want to go to your other, second, job? You guys have it made! Was it Dwight Anderson who said, “Love me, hate me, cheer me, boo me, just come out and support the game so I can play pro ball for a living?” $100/seat X 4 seats X 9 games, yeah, we got something to say: good and “bad”.
