Eskimos’ Almondo Sewell, Riders’ Brandon Bridge Twitter beefin’

Four-time CFL all-star defensive lineman Almondo Sewell is not fond of Riders quarterback Brandon Bridge and his supposed “backyard” football style.

“Brandon Bridge is not a thrower. He’s just going to scramble around and try to make up backyard plays down the field,” Sewell told TSN during the Eskimos-Riders game in Week 20.

The disrespect carried on to Twitter.

Sewell reiterated his point about Bridge’s playing style.

Then Saskatchewan’s pivot responded.

That’s a strong comeback from the up-and-coming signal caller, but getting on the wrong side of Sewell, who checks in at six-foot-four, 288 pounds, would be a bad decision by Bridge.

  1. Haha-Sewell can’t catch him, little frustrated Almondo? Lose some weight. Guess Doug Flutie was “backyard football QB” Bridge is an up and coming Canadian QB. So get used to him, if Chris Jones started him, he could mature into a bona fide QB.

Brandon’s NOT going to like what Derek Taylor, the TSN stats guru has to say when he’s featured in his “Details”. He let out on twitter that when you look at adjusted INT’s, adding in those the DB’s should have caught & deducting those that weren’t the QB’s fault, Bridge doesn’t look good. He iterated what the broadcast crew said in the last game – Esks should have had 3 INT’s off him. How “lucky” has he been? Only 30% of INT’s the DB’s should have had were caught. The league average is about 67%. Brandon keeps throwing balls to the defence & they keep dropping them. He chucks them up there. He’s not an accurate thrower & his receivers make him look good. His passing % in college was 50.7%. He is what he is & as the CFL gets more of a book on him, he’ll go back to what he is. Sorry, I know he’s CDN but he won’t be a starter for the Riders next year – bet on it.

I’m glad someone else sees it. Bridge doesn’t go through his progressions and consistently throws the ball into double and triple coverage.

He lacks composure in the pocket, the discipline to wait to throw until he’s seen his 2nd or 3rd read and the instinct to take that half step up or to the side that makes an end coming around the tackle miss.

The thing he is good for is escaping when there is a lot of pressure and the pocket is collapsing. It extends plays and gives the receivers a couple extra seconds to get open. There is a place for him, but it’s a niche specialty and I don’t think he had the all-around consistency to be a starter. Not yet, anyways.

And if Naylor’s Aunt had nuts, she’d be his uncle…

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out when these two player face each other on the field. Pity it won’t be for another eight months.

Sewell is looking like a cry baby and a clown right around now.

    • Hey slider how is 4th place treating you because that’s as good as the sliders will get with 2 back up QB’s,your sliders will not win another cup for a long long long time Book It!

Who won Rider? Zero pts 4th Qtr.

  6. It’s getting fans fired up too, so all’s well.

This is it??? If a Stampeder player said what Sewell did Rider Nation would circle the wagons and we’d be 10 pages deeper. Personally I don’t mind the trash talk and don’t blame Bridge for his comeback comment.

  8. Since when does a short fat guy scare an athletic tall guy?
Bridge is 6’5″- 230, if anyone from 3DownNation wants to actually check some stats…

Riders Need more young athletic offensive linemen. Sewell is an example of what a difference one player can make. I think Sewell is a mouth bag, but he is a player.

  10. Riders should trade for Johnny Manziel, thus having 2 backyard quarterbacks on the same team who could then be interchangeable! Another benefit is Saskatchewan could save money on an Offensive Coordinator since called plays are not going be followed through anyway.

  11. Lets just sit back and watch this game unfold as for bridge he’s still got some learning to do but his style is all riders take it how you want im sure he’ll prove a few people wrong if not this season the next

So can the tall athletic 6’5″ QB hold off a couple or three 300+ OL? I thought not, Wilson. If I’m walking down a dark alley at night I’ll take Mondo. Probably the strongest guy in the CFL. His pre-draft results (look them up), 4.88 40 (he’s 280), Bench press – 44 reps of 225 lb. Careful, Brandon, if he gets a hold of you he may just snap you in 2. Oh yeah, Bridge’s combine results – 4.72 40.

  13. Lmao…shouldnt knock other players, one day they might be by your side on your team! Lol

  14. Sewell better worry about the team he’s playing on Sunday ! And it ain’t saskatchewan!

  15. My opinion of Sewell the DR hasn’t changed – he’s great. However, Sewell the man, drops off the map – just another big mouth and the league has lots of those.

Well the biggest crybaby & yap is Carter.

Bridge is a very promising quarterback who will only develop more. Riders would be foolish not to sign him to a decent lucrative contract. We need to develop Canadians at the quarterback position and bridge is talented enough to be the beginning of this trend.
