Riders put up billboard on main street to Bombers stadium

The Roughriders have put up a billboard that reads “Celebrate Saskatchewan Day Sep 9” along Pembina Highway in Winnipeg.

It’s the main thoroughfare that gets fans to Investor’s Group Field, the Bombers’ home stadium in the Manitoba capital.

Saskatchewan won the Labour Day classic decisively in front of a sold-out crowd at new Mosaic Stadium. The Banjo Bowl has sold-out – it should be a great atmosphere on Saturday.

Does anyone know what these cost? I’m curious.

    • I’m curious too so I can put a sign on your bus route.

      • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:07 am //

        I like bright colors!

      • I wish people could lighten up. Everything is in good, clean fun. This isn’t like the American civil war; putting family members against each other. It’s a game people. It’s all in the name of competition and FUN.
It wasn’t that many years ago when the Bombers were 7-1 and the Riders were 1-7. The Bombers had a sign by the old Riders Stadium calling their CFL Rivals a little backwards. I thought it was brilliant. It made me chuckle each time I saw it. Unfortunately for Winnipeg they lost both games that year.
It was Recently decease StreetHearts lead man Kenny Shields day in SK. That was Sept 6th. I don’t care where you are from. If your music taste is in Rock. Then how could you not like Kenny Shields and StreetHeart.
Funny how football rivalry pulls us apart and music brings people together.
Manitoba fans; See if you can find the humour in this joke. Remember its humour.
What do you call a Blue Bomber wearing a Grey Cup ring?
        A senior Citizen. lol
Maybe this is the year the Bombers smash that joke into smithereens. Heck if the Prairie Riders don’t win the GC. Then I hope Winnipeg does. Simply because the organization and the loud and proud fans deserve it.

  6. RiderNation // September 7, 2017 at 8:33 pm //

We can afford it, so don’t worry about it.

    • white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 8:42 pm //

I was honesty just wondering the cost. I might like to advertise business in the future.
But since you made that comment……On a day I’ve been called arrogant th is the most arrogant response ever….fyi not sure you can afford it. Costs are getting high…next TV deal may be less money…there won’t be as much for anyone. And I’m sorry 4000 more fans than average and some Jersey sales isn’t as much as you too much it is

      • Lancaster/Reed // September 8, 2017 at 8:29 am //

What business do you own in calgary? Free advertising right now.

      • The Riders sell more merchandise than the rest of the teams combined and when it’s purchased from Riders Stores, the team gets 50% of profits (as opposed to 1% they get if you buy something with the logo from somewhere like Walmart). Also, they’ve sold out every game including preseason. They’re not hurting for money.

    • Absolutely. The Bombers should have paid for this Rider sign.It creates interest and a bit of completion. The Riders have placed a billboard sign in the past outside of Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. The Media covered it and it created interest.Money well spent for the CFL.

  7. white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 8:48 pm //

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand it’s unnecessary, arrogant ,untrue and belegerant. One the other it is a free promotion for the bombers and the league. History has shown these end up being symbols of idiocracy for the riders.

    • riderontheisland // September 8, 2017 at 10:46 am //

what history is that? I’ve been to games in BC where they have done the same and held the Riderville party and still won. This happens a lot more than you realize so I believe your facts are lacking.

    • i do marketing for the company i work for billboards depending on location (in Regina mind you no sure if Winnipeg is different) run anywhere from 2-5000 depending on location per month

      • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:02 pm //

Thansk Peter. I would imagine the bigger the city the more pricy they get. Do you have to sign a contract and do mimimum amount of months!

  8. I absolutely love it as it adds fuel to the rivalry and promotes the league and the bombers.

  9. No one cares about your opinion in this matter horsie

    • If no one cares about his opinion, why do the Saskatchewan fans become apoplectic every time he makes a post about the Riders?

P.S.: Apoplectic – overcome with anger, extremely

      • Leo.. Its like a Wasp flying around your head. Really if you leave it alone, it will possibly leave you alone. But realistically, you should probably swat it out of the air, because they will sting you when you don’t. 😉

  10. Judge Jones // September 7, 2017 at 8:59 pm //

Rider Nation: You obviously have forgotten the Riders selling football tickets for wheat? You’ve been there before so you could do it again. You would surely loose some of your arrogance.

    • Come on Judge it’s all in good fun. There is no arrogance. The sign dosent say anything about a score or past history. Or predicting an outcome for this weekend. It’s just a little tiny elbow tap from your closest rivalry. The Bombers have done the exact same thing and even harder when the 1-7 Riders were to host the 7-1 Bombers. That wasn’t that many years ago. Just have fun people. Lighten up… it’s just a game.

  11. It’s called promoting the game. What team draws the most in every city? What team draws the most on TV?
Love the CFL but maybe others could learn by having some fun and actually promoting the CFL
Win or lose at least butt will be in the seats caring about the game

  12. Considering what Troy Westward started (Banjo Bowl), the Riders are amping up a game without being rude, crude or otherwise ! I think it’s a great promotion of the CFL, Bombers and the Riders.

  13. Cheeky as always but that’s the Riders organization. In all honesty it’s good to promote the game but these billboards are getting a little tiresome. It’s the same basic “stunt” every year they just change the message a little. It’s not sour grapes it’s just come up with something new and creative, not a rehash of the same old idea. Also judging by the building in the picture it doesn’t appear to be an area of Pembina immediately close to the stadium, although it is getting closer…unlike that one a couple years ago on Plessis that wasn’t anywhere near or on the way to the stadium lol. Go Bombers!

    • white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 10:16 pm //

Nothing the riders do is original. They use old tired promotions, in game experiences and uniform ideas. Rider nation, ganggreen all nicknames from other teams…….I watched the beginning of Labor day game in Regina and the fans holding up the cards…I remember how awe struck I was watching that the first time……during the opening ceremonies of the 1988 winter Olympics at historic McMahon

      • Also, don’t forget that their “On Roughriders” fight song is really “On Wisconsin” with different lyrics.

        • white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 10:34 pm //

True..and melon heads…origins of the original LA Rams

        • Sorry to burst your bubble Leo Lewis but On Roughriders is a remake of a Christian song called On Stockaders. Calling Jesus Christ as their guide and captain. Yes the Wisconsin Badgers first took the song and changed it. So what… in the world of past CFL football. Everything was done or created by volunteers. What ever SK has done. They have taken a team from the brink of chapter 11 (as many CFL teams have faced) to a very strong healthy and vibrant Organization. In the world of business. That is the ultimate goal.
When something is pulled from the smouldering ashes of destruction and is built into a thriving franchise. The haters that loved seeing their competition in the dirt and hoping for bankruptcy. Can’t help but hate seeing that competition rise up out of the ashes

      • Dear horse,

Would you please be so kind as to have your mom unlock you for a bit ? If so, head toward the light upstairs and to the back yard, dig a BIG hole – then bury your head in it.

        Warm regards,

  14. So what else is new? They do this EVERY year at least once!

  15. I’d like to see them spend a little cash on their half time shows too. So far I’ve seen wiener dog races and a watermelon eating contest? I paid big dollar for club seats, give me a slice of watermelon instead and how about a band?

ps.. historic McMahon haha.. sure yep

    • white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 10:44 pm //

No stadium as seen more playoff action. Who else has hosted Olympic ceremony’s!??

True fans do not worry about half time shows. Although Calgary has had a few original and amazing ones

    • Blackhawk89 // September 7, 2017 at 10:45 pm //

Don’t forget about the dump “SAD”dle dome which won’t be replaced in time to save the flames, hello Seattle l…

      • white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 10:55 pm //

This is football talk not hockey…honestly I could care less if flames moved to Seattle..or Regina 😉

        • At least in Regina… they would be supported 😉

          • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 11:00 am //

I don’t think there is much issue for support concerning the flames in Calgary.
            You would need an arena.

          • Lol why would we need one right now? We don’t have an NHL team. If Calgary can’t get a new arena built for their team, they might as well put one over here. It wouldn’t be hard putting around 19k-20k butts in the seats. Saskatoon has been putting around 12k consistently for Rush games. Because another Alberta city couldn’t look after them. Why not shoot us an NHL team now?

          • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 5:24 pm //

What!! The rush? What’s the point of watching them? Regular season warriors and they choke in playoffs!!!

You get 12000 at Rush games, 9 times a year and all weekend games, Riders you get 33000 , 9 dates and it takes people from all over the province to get that…driving there in the warmest months, mostly weekends
You would need 19000, 41 dates per year, all days of the week in Jan/feb
Further how many of the 33000 at rider and 12000 at Rush would keep going if they where dishing out $4000.00 for hockey tickets.
You can think what you want but I don’t see potential owners lining up at the mayors office to put their team there.

  16. They did this in Ottawa 2 years ago. “Wait a second… Who, exactly, is the home team ?” They were something like 3 and 10 at the time, to which I answered “3-10 – who, exactly, is the expansion team ?”

Oh, and then we blew them out and their coach got canned.

  17. white stallion in red // September 7, 2017 at 11:40 pm //

    So you know…..
Calgary invented greycup week in 1948 when a group of people took the train from Cal to Toronto with a horse and took it into the lobby of the York hotel

Also in 1994 Calgary invented to concept of 3rd alternative jerseys and alternative colors now used by almost every sports team in North america

  18. justforkicks // September 7, 2017 at 11:48 pm //

Horse in the lobby? Yep that speaks of class right there. As for promotions getting old at least we have some. Riders should get reimbursed for promoting the CFL as well as they do. If the rest of the league is so sharp what have they done recently?

    • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:00 am //

      What have you done recently??

      • justforkicks // September 8, 2017 at 12:12 am //

What, are you asking about me personally? I thought the discussion was about the teams and their promotional efforts. What have the Riders done recently is what the article is about.

        • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:30 am //

I’ve though about it. The is is just an ad for a retail business and exploiting the game in the process. This is actually quite bad media manipulation to get you to buy another jersey.

          • You have zero business acumen as evidenced by your comment. You really need to step into the 21st century pal. Then again, you’re in Calgary! hahaha

    • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:49 am //

Class = Placing cold/sticky watermelon on head???????? 😉

      • Some of you are mixing to many things together. The fans invented the Green watermelon head. Just like cheese heads.
The Riders organization as a whole has always advertised above board. What fans or fanatics do has nothing to do with the franchise. That’s like blaming the Father for his 18 year old Daughter wearing skimpy, provocative clothing.
I don’t blame the Bombers or the rest of their fans for the spitting on a player or physical Gopher abuse this past weekend.

        • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 10:14 am //

Nobody is blaming organizations for fan behavior.
You are right some of those are fan inventions..just not rider fans!

  19. Love this. I loved it when they did the same kind of thing in Hamilton (and I’m a Ticats fan)

Promotes the CFL, promotes fun, and yeah the Riders have lots of fans in lots of places in Canada so it promotes their pride too. I think that’s all great. And it’s ammo for those fans who favour the home-team opposition, so win-win.

  20. white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 12:13 am //

At its core, this is merely an ad for a retail store. No different than the Mark’s billboard I saw earlier. It’s just exploiting the game.

  21. Well folks – I’m going to throw it out there before tomorrow nights game.

    For the W :

BC – By 17 (or more BC Dave)
    RIDERS – By 8…yes 8
    ESKS – 10
    Hamilton – By 3

Let er loose boys – bring on your picks.

Purpose of marketing. Get people to acknowledge, engage in, and remember a product. This is simply marketing a game. NFL season starts this week, kids are back to school. Summer holidays are over. Hockey is starting to take over the sports channels.

This puts a focus on the CFL and one of its marquee games. I am sure if Calgary did this in Edmonton or Montreal did this in Ottawa there would outrage there too. If the Argos were to do this in Hamilton the same thing would happen.

We need to promote the league as a collective whole. This is one way to start it.

  24. The Bombers should be happy the Riders are putting up a sign reminding Rider fans in Winnipeg about the game on Sept 9/17. The Bomber have been in IGF for 41/2 years had 40 home games and have sold out 6 times. The home opener and Rider game in 2013, two games in 2014 when the Riders were there, the Rider game in 2015 and 2016. They have helped to sellout the game in 2017. Only 12 times have the Bombers drawn more than 30,000 since IGF opened. The Bomber organization I bet loves it when the Riders come to town.

    • Way to do your homework. Well played. It’s all in fun and games when they do these promos. Relax people and let’s enjoy another weekend of CFL football.

      • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 9:38 am //

It’s simple manipulation. In he same spirit of tobacco companies manipulated youth. Riders and the riderstore played to this idea that rider fans “own” every stadium in this league. They picture shows 2 girls wearing shirts, head bands, rider hair and foam fingers. All stuff from the store (either in person or online). Now many will go buy more junky merchandise they don’t really need.

  25. Is there a psychologist that reads this column that can help Horsie? This dude really needs help! Please step forward if you can help. I’m sure many readers on here would help pay the bill.

  26. Didn’t I see a Bombers billboard with Weston Dressler on it at one time or am I imagining it? Maybe I saw it on the net or something.

  27. white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 11:04 am //

    Riderstore dot com
Think about it! My why would that be in there is this wasn’t a sales stunt??

  28. Good stuff! If it puts bums in the seats and jerseys on some backs, well done! Unfortunate the resident Lefty is again ridiculing good business, Alberta could use some lessons obviously.

  29. warren mills // September 8, 2017 at 2:53 pm //

Best sign ever, set up in Regina before a LDC game,

“Winnipeg, keep your little Willy out of our Regina”

Mods, any chance we can get a minimum age (or even an IQ test) for admission to all this?
My grade school yard bullies were a nicer bunch….

  30. White Stallion you only come here to troll Riders fans. Who gives a shit about regular season records? The Riders and Stamps have met in playoffs 6 times since 2006, Riders won 5 times. 5-1 Riders vs Stamps in past 6 playoff matches. Go Riders!… and go away troll!

    • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 6:09 pm //

      2006, long time
2007, you were better game as in mosiac
      2009 ,game was in mosiac
2010, 2013 ..No Bo for Calgary and you had Durant…things have changed….Outside of your 5 mentioned glory games how have things been working out for ya?

      • You mean the glory games that rendered Calgary’s regular season wins for those seasons irrelevant? Face it, Calgary CHOKES to Saskatchewan in playoffs. ‘Nuff said.

        • white stallion in red // September 8, 2017 at 7:18 pm //

Well Sean we can discuss that past all day. Fact is Calgary is poised for another western final at home while sask will have to scratch and fight just to MAYBE make the playoffs. Who would you rather be at present?

  31. Ask the ’89 Eskimos who had a 16-2 regular season record, which by the way is better than your Stamps have ever had, how much regular season records mean. Playoffs are a new season and records mean squat, as shown by what happened in last year’s Grey Cup as well.

  33. Oh I celebrated Saskatchewan day in Winnipeg alright lol ;). Go Bombers!
