Ricky Ray ruled out; Argos to make decision on starting QB Thursday

Toronto head coach Marc Trestman has ruled quarterback Ricky Ray out for Friday’s game against Montreal.

A decision about who starts at quarterback for the Argos will be made on Thursday. With McLeod Bethel-Thompson on the six-game injured list that leaves Cody Fajardo, Jeff Mathews and Dakota Prukop as options to start for Toronto.

Ray was hit by Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Michael Kashak last week.

The 38-year-old suffered a shoulder injury. Toronto has allowed a league-high 20 sacks on the season.

“I’m having some pain when I throw,” Ray said.

Argos veterans were bracing for time without Ray. Under Trestman, Ray was leading the league in passing yards (2,421) and attempts (292) in the Argos’ pass-first offence.

this is NOT good for the argos but ALSO going to cause HEART ATTACKS in riderhole! they have to be very AWARE of the qb SUPPLY and DEMAND as they look for ANYONE to be the LIFE PRESERVER for their SINKING team. knowing that GLENNS best years are BEHIND him and bridges are STILL some time AWAY it would be FOOLISH to think that jones isnt COUNTING on a qb GLUT to BAIL him out! so for EVERY qb that goes DOWN the situation gets a little TENSER for saskatchewans so called LEADERSHIP.

    • Hey keyboard tourettes – are you and horse roommates or how did this turn to the Riders again ? Maybe stay out of the whiskey until at least 11 a.m

never even MET the man sorry to DISAPPOINT! and psst you might want to WORK a bit on your reading COMPREHENSION since the BULK of my post EXPLAINED the link to the riders. but i EXPECT you just got to the first MENTION of them and jumped to the REPLY box to come BLEAT about nothing in particular! or are you from one of the REMEDIAL education tracks where everything has to be explained OVER and OVER again in SMALL words or you cant understand? if so i suggest you simply REREAD until you catch up with the REST of us!

        • WHatEveR FLOATS yOUr BOaT CHAmP !! GEt WeLL SOON

          • LMAO!!! keyboard tourettes! That’s money… cash money.

grumbling… You please do the rereading. I’m not sure if while you are typing up your comments, you keep hitting the Caps lock button or what your deal is. Your comments are unreadable.

Link to the Riders.. I’m not seeing that up top. Oh wait there isn’t one. The only link that exists in horsie’s and your brains. But that’s also linked to the Asperger’s you guys have.

Hope Ricky a speedy recovery. The guy didn’t just fluke 6 games in a row of 300+ yards. The Argo’s need him big time.

robe are you NEW here? yuppie has posted that on MOST things ive written this week but im GLAD its still getting CHUCKLES from those who are SLOWER to catch on lol.

is there a PROBLEM with your reading? its not like anythings SPELLED differently just SOME of the letters are different SHAPES which we call CAPITALS. do you ALSO struggle to read JOINED UP letters and have to hand print EVERYTHING? lol! and as i ALREADY explained injury to ANY quarterback UPSETS supply and demand. so since jones is in the MARKET for one or at least SHOULD be you can BET the riders will be paying CLOSE attention to rickys HEALTH!

Get well soon Ricky. Both Cody Fajardo and Dakota Prukop did well in the pre-season. I would go with Fajardo based on longevity. He has been with the Argos for three years but got injured in the only game he started last year. Fajardo will give the Argos an extra running back as Ray is a classic drop back quarterback.

  4. If the Alouettes don’t win this game, they’re worse than anyone thought.

  5. Cody…100%….everyone knew this was going to happen. Especially the way and amount Ray was getting hit

Cody is a scrambler, Matthews is more drop back. Why not platoon them? Keep the Als D off balance, and get a look at both of them under game conditions. I seem to recall, back in the day, the Rough Riders doing this with Holloway and Clements and later, the Argos with Holloway and Barnes. Both of those teams won Grey Cups doing it…

    • Interesting idea. Football is always a chess match, throwing a couple different looks would certainly keep the D on their toes. Either way, good idea to give Ray proper healing time

Jim, that would be a great idea. Matthews and Fajardo’s styles are very different. That should throw Montreal off a bit as they have to adjust to each QB.

  7. Platooning? Perhaps hard for a QB to get into a rhythm. Maybe play them both but not series by series.

    Fajardo should start
