Ticats release Canadian receiver Spencer Watt

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have released Canadian receiver Spencer Watt, per sources.

The Ticats were shopping Watt before the 2017 CFL draft, but found no one will to part with assets due to the salary he commanded on his deal at the time.

Watt signed with the Ticats in February, 2015 after five season with the Toronto Argonauts but suffered a torn Achilles during off-season training. He ultimately played just one campaign with Hamilton, registering 21 catches for 211 yards in 18 games last season.

The Ticats still have Canadian pass catchers Giovanni Aprile, Mike Jones and Felix Felix Flaubert-Lussier on the roster and selected Jacob Scarfone from University of Guelph in the 2017 CFL Draft.

  1. i am very ok with this. not a lot of production (but sometimes canadian receivers not named fantuz cannot get so much as a look from ticat quarterbacks).
if this means a starting role for mike jones, i would be, again, very ok.
here is jones’ youtube highlight video. great speed, great hands …

  2. Now we can finally fall back on Aprile.

  3. Maybe… just maybe there won’t be any Canadians starting at receiver this season… we might see five Imports instead… after all Ticats have loaded up with Import receivers…

So where do the Ticats start their Canadian content??? These are the ones we know for sure (barring any injuries)

    OL… Filer, Bomben and Revenberg

    DB… Stephen and Butler

    DL… Laurent

Potential other starters… most likely will be on the DL…

    DE… Cappicotti, McGough, Okafor, Vaughn

    DL… Atkinson, McGough, Gill

    OL… Schram (long shot)

@Snake, great summary! Calloras pushed Spencer to come to Hamilton when got him, so I would think he would like to target him
We did have more injured than playing last game! But we still didn’t win. Doesn’t that make almost all expendable?

  4. What about à Canadian Kicker !? Would help the situation….

Is Jones lurking in the darkness ready to pounce?

  6. I too think it was very likely we’d see 4 of our national starters on defense, with 3 interior OL filling out the required 7. At least until Fantuz is ready to play (assuming he does sign with the Ticats).

But who knows, someone like Jones could show they’re ready to take on a starting role in camp, providing Austin and the coordinators with more options.

No great loss…totally replaceable. Now P/K…well…

  8. The wide side WR is seldom used in Hamilton. It’s tough to contribute when you never get thrown the ball.

Felix Faubert Lussier is going to surprise people.
