Riders Chris Jones fined for meeting with publicist for Johnny Manziel

Saskatchewan Roughriders vice-president of football operations and head coach Chris Jones has been fined $5,000 by the CFL for meeting with the publicist for quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The 24-year-old Manziel is on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats exclusive negotiation list and the league said Jones’ actions “constitutes tampering and is in violation of CFL By-Laws.”

In early February, 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reported that the Riders worked out Manziel. The team denied it and the league said that “based on evidence to date” there’s no evidence the Riders worked out Manziel.

45 Comments on Riders Chris Jones fined for meeting with publicist for Johnny Manziel

  1. At this rate, Chris Jones should just sign over his paycheques to the League Office with all the fines he incurs.

  2. Way to keep embarrassing us Jones!!! Remember Jones saying here had been no contact with Manziel, Guess hos publcist doesn’t count? JONES is a liar and a cheat and an embarrassment to all us Riders. Board of Directors get off your butts and do something!!!!

    • Take a chill pill . . . you rather having a winning coach who pushes the limit, or a yes man who doesn’t win anything?

      • Looks like the Riders don’t have either one right now

        • Cheating is cheating even if we Riders do it. Don’t recall the Riders ever being fined let alone for over $100k in less than a year. 5 win season is “winning”? You must be a Trump fan!

“push the limits”??? Come on Ladd Law. If that’s the standard you have for your team I feel sorry for you

I stayed in Regina for the GC a few back, and nobody even comes close to your enthusiasm. Nobody else decorates their apartment buildings and pets like the Rider fans. This Jones thing is crap! You don’t deserve it. Don’t listen to the others who may mis-interpret your love of your team as something not great! Out of all of the Grey Cups, none will compare to my trip to Regina

So no details, just a statement that he did not contact the agent, not the player, no workout.
    So fined for not tampering.

  4. We can now stop roasting Mr Dunk. He did his job. There was clearly tampering on the part of Jones. He continues to push the limits of his authority and one wonders how long the Rider organization will tolerate his behaviour. This is a critical year for him. My prediction is that he is gone at the end of this season.

    • I was just thinking that about Dunk. So many fans were questioning Dunk’s competence and integrity when he reported this. Though I’m sure Dunk has slept well at night regardless, they should acknowledge their own lack of objectivity and apologize to him.

    • You are bang on!!!! Tampering is tampering. Dunk should be getting an apology for some of us Riders fans!

    • truenorthern // April 28, 2017 at 2:05 pm //

Nope, Dunk got it wrong. He reported a workout occurred. It did not. No workout, no contact with agent.

There should be some room for a team to determine whether or not a player would even want to play in the CFL before starting negotiations with other teams and wasting everyone’s time.

      • CC Rider // April 28, 2017 at 3:10 pm //

Except that the player is someone else’s property. It’s not Jones’ place to find that out about Manziel. In fact, he should have no contact with Manziel, or any other player on any other team’s negotiation list, or anyone having anything to do with those players.

      You know what Garcia98
I don’t think he lasts that long. This guy could be the next Vince Lambardi it doesn’t matter; he’s caused too much damage to continue with this team.

  5. Scottsask // April 28, 2017 at 12:41 pm //

    Get it together Jonesy!

  6. Facts Are Facts // April 28, 2017 at 12:50 pm //

Talking with a publicist is a whole different animal than actually working out a player on another team’s neg list. Like that hack Dunk reported.

    • CC Rider // April 28, 2017 at 1:04 pm //

Well, that they can’t prove it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. And I know which of the two men I’d believe first.

    • Billinburlington // April 28, 2017 at 2:03 pm //

In my mind the publicist is under ontract to represent the player. Echo, Jones met with a players rep while that player’s rights belonged to another team. Classic definition of tampering. Jones got off very lightly here. At the least, there should be heavier fines including a loss of a draft pick.

    • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 2:41 pm //

its tampering just the same. Its fishing !!!

  7. So technically Jones was right – they didn’t work out Manziel – but he did go on a “fishing expedition” – possibly to see if he wanted to acquire his rights from the Ticats. Tampering is still tampering. Jones sure likes to push the limits to try to win but so far it’s not working. There are plenty of examples of teams in the league that ARE successful staying within the rules. It’s time for Jones to learn that his tactics are no guarantee for success.

  8. Facts Are Facts // April 28, 2017 at 1:03 pm //

It’s interesting that anything negative towards the Riders, you hacks all over it. However, not a peep out of you towards the Als, or even the Lions who were also fined btw. Just saying.

  9. Eddy Rayner // April 28, 2017 at 1:44 pm //

Well … there you go Drew – your next article! Find out and disclose all CFL fines (teams only?) for the last 5 years!

  10. Jones breaking the rules is nothing new, but Wally got fined for Bighill’s contract. Let’s see 3Down find out what happened there.

  11. So all of you who doubted Jones now say “contacting his agent is different than working him out”. Hello!! Do you STILL believe Jones didn’t actually work him out? Are you going to believe Dunk or Jones. Not being caught & not doing it are 2 different things. After being fined 5 times for $110,000 where exactly does Jones’ credibility lie?

  12. Yeah I’d rather have a winning coach. Is there one available right now? Jones had 5 wins, yay – WINNING!! For a Rider club which lost over $4 Million last year, Jones’ penchant for fines & an increasingly bloated coaching staff is a lot of $$$ to pay for 5 wins. How many people does it take to coach the Riders – 15 apparently.

  13. mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 3:29 pm //

So we know he met the publicist, we know Jones had a desire to sign a big name former NFL star (see Vince Young). It makes sense and is well within a reasonable doubt to think he did work him out.

On behalf of Rider Fans I would like to extend a thumbs up to Justin Dunk for this article and many others that shed light on issues concerning the CFL. It’s enlightening and enhances the image of the league.

    • Ladd Law // April 28, 2017 at 4:29 pm //

Good point. I think it was Dunk who reported on the crack dealing story too.

      • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 5:02 pm //

        Ladd law’s greatest hits
side 1- We have a better stadium
        side 2- Tommie Campbell
        got anything else?

      • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 5:04 pm //

and the 2 about 2 separate rider players who abuse women

  15. I guess Dunk is somewhat vindicated. Something Riders fans need to realize is that perception becomes reality. At least 80 percent of CFL fans see Jones as unethical, or even Guilty of cheating. Surely this will be his downfall in Saskatchewan at some point. If the Riders don’t’ twin a lot of games, it becomes very easy to fire Jones based not on his big contact but on the notion that the organization wants to save face. In the CFL, winning isn’t always enough. Look at the Ed Hervey firing up in Edmonton.

  16. For those defending Jones because “he didn’t work him out” At this point they can only prove he had a meeting with a person representing Mr. Manziel. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t actually worked out by the Riders. So by those standards it’s ok to commit a crime as long as you don’t get caught! He got caught with his hands in the proverbial cookie jar! Stop embarrassing yourselves by defending this guy he’s just making a great franchise look bad.

Or its ok if a take a rock and break the jewelry store window but don’t go in and take anything.

  17. Brian Lazorko // April 28, 2017 at 6:08 pm //

As usual 3downnation misses the story completely. Here is the real story. Orridge angered the board of governors with his expensive witch hunt against the Riders last season. Silly media rumours had it that the Riders were housing and paying almost 100 players. The witch hunt only came up with the Riders practicing contract and non contract players in the same area code on the same day. Remember that Orridge was recently fired by the board of governors. The real story here is that the board of governors caught Orridge going on another costly witch hunt against the Riders because Orridge heard a fake news story of the Riders working out Manziel.

    • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 6:31 pm //

Its Rider fans against the world isn’t it Brian?
Sorry but you have to start facing the facts.

    • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 6:42 pm //

Brian, Why would Orridge have it in for the Riders? The conspiracy theories you guys are coming up with are very entertaining

  18. Honestly Brian,
The Riders definitely had players in Regina that were not deemed within CFL rules. This is a fact. Don’t try to politicize professional football in Canada. Cool it with your American left vs. Right / us vs. Them rhetoric . It is not needed here. And hearing people spew “fake news” is as over- done as dudes still wearing the man-bun hair style.

  19. Solara2000 // April 28, 2017 at 7:00 pm //

Why are so many Rider fans bent out of shape? Hey it’s just a piece of news. Take it for what it is.

  20. This story is laughable. So Jones talked with a PR person for Johnny Football, it probably went like this…

Jones: So do you think Johnny would want to play in the CFL?
PR guy: Nope still looking at NFL opportunities
Jones: Ok, I won’t ask the Ticats for his rights then

And for those who complain that he doesn’t win. Last year was the first time in his 15 year career in the CFL coaching that his team didn’t make the playoffs. During a MASSIVE roster rebuilding effort.Expectations are higher this year for sure and for good reason. But his track record is not that of a perennial loser.

It baffles me to see how rabidly anti-rider the staff of this site are by the articles. There were 3 alone on the Cox story, all saying the same thing. He was a guy with a past that the Riders gave a chance to. Once he stepped out of line he was cut immediately. Had it been the Lions, Ticats, or any other team not so much would have been made of it. Hell the Stamps had a player arrested for DEALING COCAINE out of his grandmothers house. And that caused less of an outrage.

    • mrnehnehincognito // April 28, 2017 at 10:18 pm //

First off Keith you have no idea what the conversation was. Second the content of conversation isn’t the point. The point is he was sticking his nose where it shouldn’t have been. He needed to ask the Ti-Cats if he could talk to anyone regarding Manzeil’s CFL interest.

For the most part Jones has only been a coordinator and often on some pretty good teams at that (calgary, montreal). Edmonton was already built when he took over so his ability to build his own winner is very much in question.
Lastly Jones as purged the team for a second straight year proving last years moves were pretty much all mistakes. What would be different about this year???

  21. Keith the prospects for playoffs in the West aren’t good. Our QB isn’t Mitchell, Reilly, Jennings or Nichols – it’s Nichols backup. Our RB isn’t Johnson, Rainey, Harris, Messam, White or Van – it’s Van’s backup. Our DT’s are Minter & Steele, backups. Just look @ our lineup. His massive rebuild includes dumping Lemon & Chick, 2 of the top sacked in the league, for no return & are you seriously going to tell me with Durant gone our QB position is upgraded? Playoffs are, to put it nicely, highly unlikely. Don Matthews was a genius till he came to the Riders. Chip Kelly’was an offensive mastermind till he blew up the Eagles roster, got canned & now is back as an OC. Jones winning ways are yesterday’s news.
