Vince Young’s agent says he’s opened discussions with Riders

Leigh Steinberg, the recently hired agent for former NFL quarterback Vince Young, says he’s opened negotiations with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Steinberg announced yesterday via Twitter that he’d been hired by Young aiming to review his football career. 3DownNation first reported that the Riders added Young to the neg list on Feb. 2.

Steinberg is an ultra high-powered agent who has represented Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks Troy Aikman, Steve Young and Warren Moon – who also starred with Edmonton Eskimos – as well as running back Ricky Williams who played one season in Toronto. Steinberg was also the inspiration for the title character in the movie Jerry McGuire.

A third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by Tennessee, Young played six NFL seasons with the Titans and Eagles and a member of the Bills, Packers and Browns. He’s thrown for almost 9,000 yards in his NFL career with 46 touchdowns and 51 interceptions while adding 282 rushing attempts for 1,459 (5.2 yards-per-carry average) and 12 touchdowns. The 33-year-old hasn’t taken a pro snap since 2011 with Philadelphia. He announced his retirement from the NFL on June 14, 2014.

Young, who won a NCAA national championship with the University of Texas in 2006, has had bumps along his pro career. Distraught by poor play and injury, he disappeared for several hours in 2008, leading then-Titans head coach Jeff Fisher to phone police. And in 2012, the Associated Press reported that Young had spent much of the $34 million he earned in the NFL. In January 2014, Young filed for bankruptcy.

Young was on the Montreal Alouettes neg list from August 2012 but he was taken off by 2015.

The Riders currently have veteran Kevin Glenn – whose 37 – as well as youngsters Brandon Bridge, G.J. Kinne, Bryan Bennett and Jake Waters under contract at quarterback. 3DownNation recently reported that the team worked out Johnny Manziel.

Glenn seems ready to take on whoever shows up at training camp.

  1. He is younger (33) than Durant (34) or Glenn (37). Might be a wee “bit” rusty…as he hasn’t taken a full-on game snap since 2011. He was a beast though. Great for the press, can’t hurt.

  2. The famous Leigh Steinberg is now doing chump-change CFL contracts? Wow.

  3. Obviously the CFL is a recognized bonafide league by agents and NFL , just not recognized by Toronto sports press

      Yeah, maybe not so much.

Young: “Hey Leigh – I’m ready to play football again. I believe I’m in the best shape of my life.”

Steinberg: “Dude, you haven’t started a game since 2011. You retired *three years* ago!”

Young: “There’s gotta be something I can do. Any AAA leagues in the US I can play on? I gotta pay my DUI fines, man!”

      Steinberg: “Well… there’s always Canada…”

  4. Gawd I hope that Gangrene signs him. Nothing like taking a guy at this age, hasn’t taken a snap since 2011, has NO idea about the CFL game and its tempo.. and let him QB your offence. Gangrene would easily go 0-5 before both Young and Jones are shown the door.

    Over 30 – Check
    Criminal History – Check
Hasn’t every played CFL football – Check
Hasn’t started any football game in six years – Check

Sounds like he’d fit in Regina just fine.

Kevin Glenn is the epitome of class. I gotta say. Poor guy gets *no* respect, but he still keeps his chin up and his sense of humor cocked.

It would be a crying shame for him to retire as a Rider.

  7. Glenn is the all time most under celebrated QB in the league.Best days were with the best team ..Calgary
Question is does Jones have enough cap room to make it appealing to young, secondly if young doesn’t work out were does that leave them?

  8. Great, a soon to be 34 year old QB who hasn’t played a meaningful down in 5 years and never the CFL game. The stench of desperation continues for us Rider fans. Thanks coach Jones!

Depends upon his contract demands, since Sask has about $1.99 salary cap ceiling left after their FA signings the last 2 days. BUT since CJ has shown he is willing to ignore CFL rules, maybe he figures it’s worth a slap on the wrist to get such a QB.

  10. smells to me of a desperate man who has no idea how to find or develop the leagues next qb.Maybe he’ll work for very cheap sounds like the guy blew the 34 million he made in the nfl .The concept of smart spending is as lost on him as it is on Jones

  11. No doubt Dunk made up that Manziel nonsense to attract traffic to this site… Traffic you ass-clowns keep scaring away! C’ya

    • I doubt he would just make it up and risk the the integrity of this site he’s built. There is likely some truth to it. Jones is a repeat criminal in the CFL courts and his reputation proceeds him now. The riders will be drowning in this type of thing as long as he’s around(which may not be much longer)
