What Riders spent on day two of CFL free agency

Saskatchewan made four more signings on day two of free agency, adding Canadian content and the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player from 2012.

Chad Owens inked a two-year pact for more than $110,000 per season, plus bonuses, which included significant signing bonus. Sizeable raise over last year for the Flyin’ Hawaiin.

2016 East division all-star safety Marc-Olivier Brouillette put pen to paper on a two-year contract worth over $100,00 and $110,000 in respective campaigns with a $20,000 signing bonus.

Canadian offensive lineman Ryan White is set to make around $90,000 and $100,000 on his two-year deal.

National running back Aaron Milton will make approximately $70,000 and $75,000

Add Owens, Brouillette, White and Milton to American offensive lineman Derek Dennis and Kienan LaFrance, and the Riders have been spending money wisely.

  1. YAWN..I know rider fans are going to call be a hater again for infringing on their topic but the fact is I’m bored.Nothing for Stamps fans to talk about. We signed all our key free agents,we know who or QB is,nothing but winning stability in our world

    • That’s why your stamps choked in Grey Cup…

      • Cliff you would have given your 13th appendage to have your team go 15-2-1 and go to OT in the grey cup after making a huge 4th quarter comeback and annihilating BC in west final..wouldn’t you have?

        • Uncle Olaf // February 16, 2017 at 9:59 am //

they still choked in the playoffs like they always do. Why don’t you admit it, they choke year after year after a good reg season record. they have no clue how to win when it counts.

          • lol and riders dont know how to win AT ALL

          • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 12:03 pm //

The Stamps have been in every one of the last five Western Finals, and three of the last five Grey Cups – winning one. The last team to go to the GC three times in a five-year span were your Riders, Olaugh, and they also have one ring to show for it (they also have the choke of the century to show for it).

The only reason why the Stamps have the “Choke in the playoffs” stigma is because they were huge favorites to win in both 2012 and 2016 and they lost (I will agree, 2012 was a pretty embarrassing loss. 2016, not so much).

Just as was the case in 2015 and 2016, it is as likely as anything that the Riders will be undefeated in the playoffs in 2017 and Calgary will have a playoff loss. Now that’s a Stat that only a Rider fan could be proud of!

    • Uncle Olaf // February 16, 2017 at 9:31 am //

that’s because the riders are the cornerstone franchise in the cfl and demand all the attention as they are what keeps the cfl afloat. Ignore that if you want, but it is true. Riders carry the quite a bit of the burden of the leagues success with all their fans throughout the country and that is why when they do anything, it gets written about. The Stamps on the otherhand are a team that just is mediocre in the media, they provide a need in the cfl but not a leader. It is what it is.

      • fine uncle olaf,,rider fans provide a marginally higher level of supoort than stamps and esks..but your team still sucks. There is simply more going on in alberta for most people..hows are the regina blues doing?

        • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:39 pm //

so you are agreeing with me, about time.

        • Typical stump fan, always on the Rider stories hating because no stump stories posted cause no one cares. What is it like to be cheering for a team that no one cares about stumpland? jealousy is so evident, get a life!!

          • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 2:53 pm //

You must be Uncle Nik’s auntie-sister. Welcome to our forums. How’s ol’ Two-tooth doing these days, anyway?

        • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:52 pm //

          Oh Larry, Larry G

          • little nickey, Olaf for veggieville, uncle Olaf, whatever… Why do you use so many monikers(look it up)? Do you keep getting punted off this site like what happened to you back on the old TSN site? Or is it that you are such a coward, you are trying to make it look like others support you vitriol? (again, look it up)

  2. Stamps have a culture of losing in the playoffs & Grey Cup. Who cares if they were 15-2-1. They still choked. Can’t get the job done.

    • how did they choke cliff?they played in a very competitive game and dam near won just before overtime.
If riders were consistently the best team and had 13-5,14-4,15-3 types of records you would appreciate how hard it is.fact is 89.07,13 were all underdog rider teams
BTW go back to 89 when riders won cup and see what team has most cups since

      • bottom line, Stamps still lost. No one cares if they “came close”!!!

        • little nickey… The reality of the Gangrene legacy is that they have LOST 15 Grey Cups and only won 4 over what, more than 100 years. And the last two years (3-15, 5-13) will be repeated this year with KG under center. Or better yet, Gangrene sign the geriatric Vince Young and actually start him. Bwaaa Haaaa Haaaaaa

          • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:42 pm //

so your answer to all the comments about the stamps choking is to try and flip it about the riders. That is called denial. Answer the questions about your stamps and comment on that, but I guess you don’t have a good answer for that because you know it is true.

          • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 3:01 pm //

Uhm, Olaf – this is an article about the Riders. It’s you and your fellow shallow-gene-poolers who were flipping the subject to the Stampeders.

    • hows it feel watching a team that before labour day comes has no hope of anything?stop your bitterness you all know you would kill to have a team as consistently good as the stamps

  3. You only remember the cups won lately..who ares about records..it’s championships..and Calgary hasn’t done much better then sask..they find ways to choke.Still laughing at cocky bumbling Bo and the season that was a waste..haha

    • Steve, why are rider fans so visceral towards stamps. You all have a grudge to Bo,cornish, and still cant get over that burris didnt want to play for you (its 12 years ago!!) Calgary has won 2 cups to your 1 in recent times..again yes cups are the ultimate but having seasons were you arent in contention suck ..you are only looking at it as a season now long over.how was it middle of august when you had nothing to play for? I can tell you in mid august things were great in calgary? Whos your qb going to be?? Vince Young? Johnny Mazeil,Franklin?? who knows!!!! must suck having no direction.. fyi-riders tried to lure Huff before they went with jones .Huff was too smart to take that offer

      • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:43 pm //

cannot count the GC win in 2014 against the ticats. The refs gave that game to them with a bogus penalty, we all know the ticats won that game even though on paper it shows the stamps won.

        • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 2:55 pm //

You mean the 2014 Grey Cup where the Ti-Cats were in the lead for exactly zero seconds? Sure Olaf. Keep telling yourself that.

        • ok olaf fine whatever keep pretending stamps lost that game..i guess i can say the riders really lost the 07 grey cup because glenn broke his collarbone at end of eastern final .you would have had your ass whipped if he played ,fact is stamps lead the entire game and defence did exactly what it planned to do in the 2nd half,STOP TRYING TO MARGINALIZE THE GREAT SUCCESS OF THE STAMPS

      • Your a downright liar, they did not try to lure Huff!!!quit with your bulls### Huff is the ultimate sleeze, if you believe he does everything on the up and up then I have a bridge to sell you.

        • oh you have inside info on how Huff does business Heather?? You should be a detective! Was Huff fined twice last year??.FYI There is a report Huff was offer 1million to join riders

        • Heather you should be approaching a reputable new agency and expose Huff with great bullet point detail of all the sleazy things he’s doing. It would really spring board your journalism career

      • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:54 pm //

easy now Larry, take it down a notch there Gammon

        • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 3:16 pm //

I gotta agree with you, Olaf. Larry should tone it down in here. “visceral”, “contention”, “direction”.. those are a lot of multi-syllable words to be using in a forum populated with Rider fans.

    • Bo Levi Mitchells true colors came out in the GC last fall. As soon as they were in trouble he shrugged his shoulders and pointed at his receivers as the issue. He is only concerned about himself, not a team player. Perhaps that leadership is the main reason for their playoff downfall.

      • as soon as they were in trouble he struggled???Did you see the 4th quarter comeback?,when else did calgary choke?.
Olaf lets take a poll and asks all cfl fans who they’d rather have as qb going into 2017..BO or glenn? I think we know the answer dont we

        • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:55 pm //

set up the poll larry if you want, I will vote in it. Im waiting!!

        • Olaf from Vegreville. // February 16, 2017 at 2:58 pm //

BLM is still a big baby who blames other people for not being successful. He proved it in the GC this past year. In the first half he threw countless bad passes and waved his hands at his receivers as if they were at fault. The guy is not a team player is obvious. Everyone commented on that, if you remember but I guess you choose to forget that part of the major loss by the stumps. They were nearly 20 point favorities and got it handed to them.

          • everyone else has also commented that BVM in only 3 years as a starter as won an MOP and Greycup MVP award

      • only concerned about himself?? this coming from the CFL team that wanted to and did sign Duron Carter?

    • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 2:39 pm //

“You only remember the cups won lately..who ares about records..it’s championships..and Calgary hasn’t done much better then sask”

What do you call “recent” Steve? Last 5 seasons? Last 10? Since 2000? Let’s see how the cup distribution looks, shall we?

      Last five seasons:
      – Toronto – 1
      – Saskatchewan – 1
      – Calgary – 1
      – Edmonton – 1
      – Ottawa – 1

      Last 10 seasons:
      – Toronto – 1
      – Saskatchewan – 2
      – Calgary – 2
      – Edmonton – 1
      – Ottawa – 1
      – BC – 2
      – Montreal – 2

      All 20xx seasons:
      – Toronto – 2
      – Saskatchewan – 2
      – Calgary – 3
      – Edmonton – 3
      – Ottawa – 1
      – BC – 3
      – Montreal – 3

Strange, I see no “lately” in that list where Calgary has ever fared worse than Saskatchewan, or anyone else in the league, for that matter.

      • and last 30 seasons cal and TO are tied with 5 each.again no one better than stamps..if riders could be consistently good with first place finishes and many 13-5,14-4,15-3 type seasons over the decades they would have playoff disappointments too winning the cup is hard (ask the alouettes).Truth is the years riders have won cup its a Cinderella team .They’ve never been the best and favored team.

  4. Okay, in all seriousness and avoiding the pissing match going on above, the spending spree would worry me if I were a Roughriders fan.

Over and over, we’ve seen teams in all sports and leagues spend tons of cash on veteran free agents, building their team through that route, and invariably it fails. Veterans are used to the way things are done on their old team and are looking out primarily for themselves financially. A couple Free Agents brought in tend to meld with the rest of the team. Several Veteran Free Agents tend to not mix in and create chemistry issues.

Draft picks and rookie free agents don’t know nuthin’-from-nuthin’ and so while they’re learning the league, they also learn the team culture and develop chemistry with the rest of the team. Players who were cut from other teams and signed are just happy to be employed and readily accept the new team culture. Veteran Free Agents control their own destiny and come into the team with a different mindset: “they need me”. It historically rarely ever works.

You build your team with draft picks and young players, and patch holes with free agents, not the other way around. I really hope I’m wrong, and will be happy to hear “I told you so” from Rider Nation, but from the way Chris Jones is putting this together, the Riders will finish 7-11 at best.

  5. George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 12:11 pm //

Rider Logic: Sucking in the regular season and missing the playoffs is less embarrassing than actually making the playoffs and losing.

Enjoy your third consecutive season of being “undefeated” in the playoffs, Rider fans.

    • you can take that to the bank George Porge.
I wanted to add 1 thing to you’re great comment previous to this.2012 was embarrassing to loss. We went into a loud pro argo stadium and lost one thing rider fans need to remember about that.Previous week we went into hostile BC place as a big underdog to the defending GC champs (after beating riders in wsf I might add) and we upset them..with our back up qb to boot!

      • So what stumpland, that was how long ago…what is your point that you beat someone sometime somewhere…omg you are dillusional. Why are you never on the stories about the stumps and always here, oh ya right no one cares about Calgary and the attitude and they don’t post stories about your team cause no one cares….lmao

        • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 3:06 pm //

“So what stumpland, that was how long ago…”

Is your last Grey Cup win now in the distant past? Because you haven’t even fielded a playoff-calibre team since then.

          • George, Stumpland and Bob knows someone are seriously needing some attention. Have a good day boys, hope things get better for you cause right now it appears that you are to stupid to know how stupid you are. See ya!!!

          • George Porge // February 16, 2017 at 3:17 pm //

At least we know the difference between “too” and “to”, Heather.

        • I do comment on the stamps site Heather,go look. anyways no interest becasue there is nothing big to report. Business as usual. We resigned all our targeted players we know who our qb is.We don’t need to desperately throw out dollars and seeing what player bite like the riders. Whos your qb long term Heather? Vince Young? Manzeil? Franklin? Tate? you don’t know nor does Jones team is again throwing the pasta and seeing what will stick to the wall..thats why youre in the news so much

  6. Derek Dennis is the only sure thing on that list, but it takes more than on player to make a quality O-line. The health of Labatte and Best will be critical.

Owens and Brouillette certainly bring the “over-the-hill” concern but they may have something in the tank. Riders obviously looking to go Canadian at RB, but the problem is LaFrance, Milton and Morris are all unproven. Should be another “interesting” year in riderland.

  7. Scott Mooney // February 16, 2017 at 2:56 pm //

Not sure how that is considered spending money wisely.

That is a ton of money for mediocre (Brouliette) and bad (Milton, Owens, LaFrance, White) players.

I know Dunk has to be a Rider honk to try and get hits to his crap but outright lying about the crap job the Riders have done in FA seems a little much.

  8. such hatred in all the riders fans. I jointed this site 6 days ago.Anytime anyone says anything negative about you there is nothing but viserel replys.Still angry Burris wouldnt play for you (its 12 years ago) still have a hate on for cornish, still can’t get over BVM and bad mouth him everytime his name is mentioned .The fact 2 former players in last few days have commented on here how crappy rider land is speaks volumes, its clear you have a2 little fan little team complex

    • Oh and by the way I am not a Rider fan I am a Lions fan I am just really confused why you spend so much time commenting/hating on another team, all you are doing is proving how simple you truly are. Life must suck for you!! If you truly believe that Huff and all CFL teams don’t break the rules then go back to living under the rock you just climbed out from…Now be gone with you….
